IS AZIMIO LA UMOJA THE PROVERBIAL TOWER OF BABEL?
“It is proving impossible to work with @skmusyoka in Azimio in Ukambani. After he joined us, he has wanted especially me out of all Azimio structures. I have no choice but to be at peace with this sad reality. History will ultimately judge all of us. May IT be kind @RailaOdinga.”
These words were tweeted by Makueni Governor Prof. Kivutha Kibwana accusing Kalonzo Musyoka of wanting him out of Azimio La Umoja from the word go when he joined the coalition under the Wiper Democratic Movement. This tweet made a lot of Kenyans take to Twitter to weigh in on this matter and offer Kibwana bytes of advice.
One Kenyan who identified himself as Kenneth and uses the Twitter handle @IkeOjuok went on to loudly ask a question which formed the title of this article. He wondered if Azimio could be the proverbial tower of Babel.
I bought into his idea because the tower of Babel was a historical monument of its time. But the objectives were wrong and that resulted in the fall of the tower. Today, I cannot say that the objectives of Azimio La Umoja are wrong but I equate its enormity to the Tower of Babel given the fact that Azimio has built itself in the recent times to be a force to reckon with.
But then when claims such as these made by Kibwana arise plus the vested interests everyone in the camp has, the downfall might be looming. It is no secret that the Ruto camp is simply waiting and watching out for any loopholes to capitalize on to ensure Azimio La Umoja loses the election at 8 a.m.
Primaries.
Failing to acknowledge the fact that UDA has so far conducted the best primaries is akin to burying our heads in the sand. And what has Azimio and its allies done? Dishing out tickets and imposing people on the electorate. Its friends such as Jubilee have simply given tickets to the “highest bidder” so to say.
It is some of these small mistakes that can make the Tower of Babel come falling. As noted by Prof. Ole Kiyiapi, if people are not going to rise above their personal interests, then the boat in which they are sailing will capsize.
Prof. Kiyiapi tweeted, “This is most unfortunate- why can’t leaders rise above self-interest for once? Kenya deserves so much better!” It is the self-interests that have led people to make bad decisions.
Running Mate
Some people are insinuating that Kalonzo expects nothing short of a running mate in the Azimio La Umoja coalition and could be one of the reasons he is out to ensure the competition is leveled to have all the grounds.
Yet it is in that same coalition that we have the likes of Peter Kenneth, Martha Karua, and Gideon Moi all eyeing the deputy presidential slot Kalonzo is eyeing as well. So, in the best of wisdom, the decision on this might as well be a puzzle to unravel for Odinga in the next 8 days as they meet the set deadline for submitting their running mate names.
Could it be that Kalonzo is out to destroy Azimio as noted by one Ogina Jc who tweeted, “Kalonzo was sponsored by UDA to come and destabilize AZIMIO from within? You better realize that early enough.”
Yet others went on hammer Prof Kibwana as one Sir James who tweeted, “How you turned into a beggar of attention puzzles me. You were told you can’t make it alone. That’s the LIE. Go for it alone. Win or Lose do it with your integrity intact,” challenging Kibwana to go alone.
And Just like that, more people pointed out that this might signal an exodus of people out of Azimio. Only time will tell.
